Eventually Lesley's body was found on the moors (the police escorted Hindley there). Delicate bones were found protruding from a peak-soaked bog. Lesley was given a proper funeral here at Southern Cemetery, Manchester.

Early on Boxing Day 1964, Hindley left her grandmother at a relative's house and refused to allow her back to Wardle Brook Avenue that night. That same day, 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey disappeared from a funfair in Ancoats. Despite a huge search, she was not found.

She was aquainted with Hindley and thought nothing of going to help her look for a glove she had lost on Saddleworth Moor. Once there, she was assaulted by Brady and buried in a shallow grave, where her body lay undiscovered for over 20 years.

On Boxing Day 1964 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey left home to go to the fair. Her older brother, Terry did not go with her because he was ill with flu. Not accompanying her on that fateful day would haunt Terry for the rest of his life. Lesley was abducted by Moors murderers, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

Their victims, Pauline Reade, 16, John Kilbride, 12, Keith Bennett, 12, Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edward Evans, 17, were buried on Saddleworth Moor. Keith's remains have never been found. Brady and Hindley were jailed for life in 1966. Hindley died in 2002 in prison.

Finally, in October 1965, police were alerted to the duo by Hindley's 17-year-old brother-in-law, David Smith. Smith had witnessed Brady killing 17-year-old Edward Evans with an axe, concealing his horror for fear of meeting a similar fate.

Alan West, whose stepdaughter Lesley Ann Downey was killed aged just 10 by Brady and his partner Myra Hindley in 1964, said he wants the “monster” to remain in a maximum security hospital.

Brady's ashes were then placed in a weighted biodegradable urn, driven to Liverpool Marina and dispatched at sea at 02:30 BST. It was reported that Brady wished to have his remains burnt and ashes scattered in Glasgow, where he grew up.

Maureen Hindley was born on 21 August 1946. She was married to Bill Scott and David Smith. She died on 3 October 1980.

Police have ended a search for Moors murders victim Keith Bennett on Saddleworth Moor after finding no human remains. An author claimed to have found evidence of the possible burial site of the 12-year-old boy who went missing in 1964 and whose body has never been found.

Lesley-Anne Down is an English actress, former model, and singer. She achieved fame as Georgina Worsley in the ITV drama series Upstairs, Downstairs.

Personal life. After ending a 10-year relationship with actor-writer Bruce Robinson, Down married Enrique Gabriel in 1980, but ended their marriage after a year and a half. Her second marriage was to film director William Friedkin from 1982 to 1985, with whom she had one son.
